What Is Leverage?

Leverage lets you control a position larger than your account balance by borrowing the difference from your broker, expressed as a ratio such as 1:100 or 1:500. It scales potential gains and losses in equal proportion — a 1% move against a position leveraged 1:100 represents a 100% swing relative to the margin committed, which is why leverage is as much a risk parameter as it is a tool for capital efficiency.

The real maximum leverage you can get is set by two things together: the tier your account balance falls into, and the instrument's own margin requirement. Higher-margin instruments such as gold or crypto reduce that ceiling further than a standard forex pair at the same balance tier, which is the distinction this calculator is built to surface.
