What Is a Pip?

A pip ("percentage in point") is the standard unit for measuring price movement in a currency pair — typically the fourth decimal place for most pairs and the second for those quoted in Japanese yen. It's the common reference traders use to describe how far a market has moved, independent of the pair's absolute price level.

The monetary value of one pip depends on the instrument's contract size, its quote currency, and your position size — the same pip movement is worth a different amount on a 0.1-lot position than on a 5-lot position, and a different amount on EUR/USD than on USD/JPY. Knowing this figure in advance lets you translate a stop-loss or take-profit distance in pips directly into a monetary amount.
